Unfortunately, thieves and swindlers have gone digital, as well. Online shoppers have to beware of scammers, phishing attacks, and even plain old unscrupulous sellers. Don't fret, though: online shopping can be safe and fun, as long as you heed the following safety reminders:
- Avoid shopping with your debit card. Even though debit cards can be used as credit cards, they are a direct link to your bank account. If someone has access to your debit card number, they can drain your account quickly and cause you to overdraft on your account. While debit cards do have the same "liable only for the first $50" when dealing with fraudulent transactions, experts say it's less of a hassle get the issue resolved with a credit card.
- Shop only from familiar and reputable sellers. Obviously, you would never walk into a seedy store in real life; you'd definitely purchase only from well-known and brightly lit shops. The same thing applies to online shopping. Also most of your favorite big box stores have online shopping, and many have "ship to store" for free. So you use your Online Coupons to buy, then pick it up instore for additional savings. If something does go wrong, you can return it to the store, rather than having to ship it back.
- Read the URL thoroughly. This is really important when using targeted email offers. Scammers will trick you with misspelled URLs or different domains that are reminiscent of the actual trusted websites you frequent ("Ammazon" for "Amazon", for example). Check the URL and make sure it's the right one before you give any of your login or credit card information away.
- Look for the "S." You should never give a website your credit card details unless its URL starts with "HTTPS" instead of the usual "HTTP." This "S" and the lock icon signify that the website is encrypted and that your information is protected.
- Secure your PC! Install a virus scanner on your computer. Some scammers will use malware to steal your information. Make sure your computer is protected with an up-to-date anti-virus program, and if you web browser has it, turn on "phishing protection."
- Check to see who is filling the order. Many large stores online are portals for smaller stores. Amazon, Buy.com, and even Sears sell items they don't actually carry. Many times the order is taken by a well known store, but is filled by a smaller merchant that is authorized to sell through that store. That means you will have to look at their terms and conditions to see if you want to purchase through them. Amazon, and Buy.com are pretty good about showing you who will be filling the order, but others are not, so make sure you check.
When it comes to Online Coupons and shopping, the same rules as brick-and-mortar shopping do apply. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Always be vigilant against thieves and scammers who will use the most updated technology to fool you. Online shopping is fun and convenient -- as long as you play smart and stay safe.
